About Kazan

Kazan – is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, and one of the largest and most beautiful cities of Russia, which is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage cities.
Kazan is one of the leaders of the Russian cities by the number of nationalities and various world religions represented. Over the millennium history of the city of Kazan it has accumulated rich experience of different nationalities and religions living together, has reached interethnic harmony. About 1.2 million people – representatives of over 100 nationalities – live in Kazan in the atmosphere of cultural, religious and linguistic diversity. The religions balance is maintained by the respect for the rules of interfaith dialogue.
These trends have caused a scientific interest in relevant projects, which are supported by government bodies: Kazan Spiritual Seminary, Russian Islamic University, Higher Muslim Madrasah Muhammadiya, higher Muslim Madrasah named after 1000 anniversary of adopting the Islam, various Sunday schools.
  • Development of modern culture specifically contributes into maintenance of inter-confessional relationships: creating conditions for the conservation and enhancement of religious values and heritage of different nationalities. Implementation of the law has improved moral climate strengthening cultural connections between East and West, which for several centuries has united Kazan. Evidencing that Kazan was recognized to be the best city of Russia in 2004 and became the All-Russian Public Prize “The Russian National Olympus” winner.
  • Kazan has repeatedly hosted sports competitions of continental scale: the 2011 European Weightlifting Championships, the 2014 World Fencing Championships, the 16th FINA World Championships and 2017 is not an exception. The city will host the FIFA Confederations Cup. In addition to this, Kazan will host the championship WorldSkills Russia in 2018. This is necessary to try out new sites that will be built for the world’s largest professional skills competition, WorldSkills in 2019.
  • In 2005, Kazan celebrated the 1000th anniversary of its founding. The city gave itself heaps of presents and became a real tourism capital of Russia. In April 2009, the Russian Patent Office granted Kazan the right to brand itself as the “Third Capital” of Russia and also as the “Sports capital of Russia”. The city hosted the 2013 Summer Universiade, 2014 World Fencing Championships and the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, will host the 2017 World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

As part of the tour, you will also visit: Sukonnaya Sloboda, Fountain Square, Kaban Lake, Kazan University, Svoboda Square, Bogoroditsky Monastery, and, of course, the Kazan Kremlin - the only Tatar white-stone fortress preserved in Russia, the northernmost point of Islamic culture in the world. The objects on the territory of the Kremlin date back to the 10th century and are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The ancient fortress, built in the distant Middle Ages during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, served as a military outpost in the Volga region and a place of rest and training for military units to march on the impregnable fortress of Kazan. The island-city of Sviyazhsk is famous for its history, the spirit of Orthodox culture, the beauty of the natural and urban landscape. On the island you can visit unique monasteries: Uspensko-Bogoroditsky and Ionno-Predtechensky with the most ancient church of all of the Tatarstan.

    Bus trip to Bolgar. Excursion "Northern Mecca" will lead You to the Bulgarian Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve - Bolgar settlement. A visit to the Memorial Sign, built in honor of the official adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgars in 922, where the largest Koran in the world is kept. A visit to one of the most significant buildings that have replenished the modern collection of the architectural heritage of Tatarstan - Ak Mosque (White Mosque). A photo is not able to fully convey all of the luxury and solemnity of this miracle. The pond, which reflects the white decorum of the building, gives the mosque a resemblance to the Indian Taj Mahal.
