Kazan to Become a Cultural Capital of the Islamic World Next Year
Kazan was awarded the “Cultural Capital of the Islamic World” title in 2026, announced the Tatarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov. 
“Kazan is the Cultural Capital of the Islamic world in 2026. This decision was made today in Jeddah by the Ministers of Culture of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation,” Minnikhanov posted in his Telegram channel. 

The day before, while delivering his speech at the 13th Conference of Ministers of Culture of the Islamic World in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), the Head of Tatarstan informed about Kazan’s nomination for the title of the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World next year. As reported on the regional leader’s website, dwelling on the Tatarstan’s rich cultural traditions, Minnikhanov mentioned that efforts are underway to inscribe a Sabantuy national festival on the list of intangible heritage of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO). 
“Thanks to the vast experience of friendly cooperation with the Islamic world, centuries-old cultural and historical heritage of Islam, we are showing a keen interest in becoming part of the ICESCO’s Cultural Capitals programme,” Minnikhanov’s statement reads.
