The Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan will sign an agreement with the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (Uzbekistan) within the framework of the XVI International Economic Forum ‘‘Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum’’. A triple agreement will also be signed between the Academy of Sciences, Kazan State University of Architecture and Engineering, and Astrakhan State University of Architecture and Construction. This was reported to journalists by Evren Rutbil, Director of the International Institute for Central Asian Studies (Uzbekistan); Sergey Strelkov, Acting Rector of the Astrakhan State University of Architecture and Construction; and Ayrat Sitdikov, Director of the Institute of Archaeology named after A.Kh. Khalikov at the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan, who participated in the session ‘‘Muslim Historical and Archaeological Heritage: Preservation, Study, Management, and Tourism’’ held as part of the XVI International Economic Forum ‘‘Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum’’.

According to Ayrat Sitdikov, the agreements are aimed at the implementation of specific projects related to the study and preservation of architectural and historical heritage sites, monuments of Muslim culture both in Tatarstan and in the Astrakhan region, the Volga region, and in the Central Asian region on the whole.

In addition, the Director of the Institute of Archaeology at the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences said that the joint project of the archaeological school implemented for several years with the International Institute for Central Asian Studies will continue. This year the school will be held in Tatarstan.

The triple agreement between the architectural universities is aimed at implementing projects for the study and restoration of historical and architectural heritage sites, as Ayrat Sitdikov noted. ‘‘The point of interest that we will focus and work on is the complex of mausoleums near the village of Lapas in the Astrakhan region. I hope that students of these universities will also be involved in work on our monuments: in Bolgar, Belyar, and Kazan, where there is also evidence of historical monuments related to the culture and history of our country as well as Muslim culture,’’ the Director of the Institute of Archaeology commented.

Evren Rutbil remarked that the Institute he heads unites 12 States, including the Russian Federation. He expressed hope that the KazanForum platform will contribute to the creation of new partnerships and joint study of Muslim heritage by Russia and the Islamic world. During his visit to the Republic to participate in the Forum, he shared that representatives of the International Institute for Central Asian Studies met with the staff of the Institute of History at the Tatarstan Academy of Sciences.

According to him, scientists are not limited to just architectural monuments: intangible heritage, documentary memorials, and other presences of cultural significance are also subject to study and preservation.

Sergey Strelkov noted that the session would discuss issues of exceptional importance. According to him, it was the first time he visited the capital of Tatarstan. Work has already begun with representatives of the Republic’s scientific community engaged in archaeology to study heritage sites in the Astrakhan region. Furthermore, co-operation will be developed at the level of students and students’ teams.
