Description:

Climate change is becoming one of the most important and serious issues for many countries. The speakers have repeatedly stressed the need to form international cooperation in the face of new climate change. There still remains a need for a sustainable development regulatory framework which governs the activity of both individuals and private companies. In addition, special attention was paid to investments in the implementation of projects to improve climate well-being, as well as the creation of new technologies meeting modern environmental requirements.

The speakers dwelled upon ongoing projects and programs in regions and countries. The Government of the Sakhalin Region is implementing a regional environmental program: taking measures to reduce emissions, switching to environmentally friendly transport, developing renewable energy sources, etc. The Agency for Strategic Initiatives is implementing a project for three regions - Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region, Sakhalin Oblast and Crimea - to implement cost-effective measures to be included in the adaptation plan. It also forms an educational program for officials of the regional level, planning to invite 180 participants from 30 regions and, as a result, receive 25 projects for practical implementation.

The speakers noted trends in the power-engineering sector: an increase in the level of energy consumption, an increase in fluctuations between day and night electricity consumption, an increase in volatility in energy markets (leap in gas and oil prices).

As a result of the discussion, the following conclusions and proposals were made:

  • It is necessary to establish a legal framework in Russia in the field of sustainable development, which would regulate the activity of both individuals and private companies;

  • It is necessary to develop international cooperation for the implementation of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals);

  • It is necessary to pay attention to the development of nuclear energy as one of the most “clean” energy sources;

  • Private enterprises need to be encouraged to follow a sustainable agenda.
