Panel Discussion: "The Role of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in Sustainable Development of Regions"

The plenary session "The Role of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in Sustainable Development of Regions" was moderated by Kazan Federal University’s Vice-Rector for Education Dmitry Tayursky. Chairman of Tatarstan’s State Council Farid Mukhametshin, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin and Kazan Federal University Rector Lenar Safin addressed the participants of the discussion.

Prior to the plenary session, a commemorative sign was unveiled in the courtyard of the Kazan Federal University to mark the inclusion of the university’s Astronomical Observatories in the UNESCO World Heritage List in September 2023. Work on the observatories' inclusion on the UNESCO list has been underway since 2019 with the support of the Renaissance Republican Foundation under the leadership of Tatarstan State Counsellor and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue Mintimer Shaymiev. "We are very happy to unveil this sign. You know, this is recognition of the world, recognition of Russia, recognition of all our merits. On this day we would like to praise our scientists of the Kazan Federal University, scientists of the Academy of Sciences, who worked very hard on this and it is really their great merit," Lenar Safin said.

During the opening ceremony of the plenary session, Lenar Safin awarded the title of Honorary Professor of the Kazan Federal University to Qatar's Ambassador to Moscow Ahmed bin Nasser bin Jassim Al-Thani.

The event was attended by Secretary General of the Malian National Commission for UNESCO Diallo Kadia Maiga, Syrian Cultural Attaché in Russia Zager Al-Ahmar, representative of the Hominid Fossil Sites in Southern Africa Mags Pillay, Chief of Staff of the Administration of the Icherisheher State Historical-Architectural Reserve Intigam Babayev, Head of the Department of Culture, Yogyakarta Special Province, Indonesia, World Heritage Site Manager Prativ Diana Lakshmi, Secretary of the National Committee of ICOMOS Colombia Kevin Alexander Echeverri Bucuru.

The session aimed to identify effective strategies to integrate cultural heritage into the sustainable development processes of regions. The panel discussed the role of World Heritage Sites in tourism development, economic and investment attractiveness of countries, regions with World Heritage Sites. "We know that UNESCO is one of the most important instruments for the preservation of world heritage. It allows us to protect our world cultural and natural heritage. It also helps us deal with climate change. Here we can see how you strive to preserve the World Heritage not only for yourselves, but also to pass it on to future generations. Let's continue to share our experiences and our culture," Mags Pillay said.

The participants of the meeting discussed the issues of preserving the religious heritage of historic cities, the participation of business in the preservation of cultural and natural heritage and historical memory, and passing it on to future generations. "I represent here a city where there are two cultures: Islam and Christianity. UNESCO calls my country a triangle of world heritage. There are many examples of interaction between our country and the Republic of Tatarstan. We study Islam - just like in your universities. We have more than 100 joint researches with the Kazan Federal University. We have a similar atmosphere. We have many common traditions," Zager Al-Ahmar said.

"I worked for many years in the sphere of state youth policy, we had a good platform - Youth Forum, and there was a motto 'New Generations - Responsibility Without Borders'. All states should share experience, help each other," Intigam Babayev said, explaining the importance of passing on cultural heritage to the younger generation.

The 15th International Economic Forum "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum 2024" is being held on May 14-19 in Kazan. This year's keynote is "Trust and Cooperation." The main goal of the forum is to strengthen trade and economic, scientific and technical, social and cultural ties between Russian regions and the countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as well as to promote the development of the Islamic financial system institutions in Russia.
