One of the main goals of the forum “Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum” is to strengthen social and cultural ties between Russian regions and the countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). To achieve this goal, specific tasks were set, namely to develop recommendations for outlining strategic prospects for the development of international socio-cultural relations between forum participants, to attract leading world experts to discuss current issues in the sphere of culture, to organize an exchange of experience in successfully implementing digital technologies in culture, to enhance the positive image of Russia in the countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the countries of this organization in Russia.

Russian Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova sent a message saying exactly what culture means for each of the countries: “Keeping a dialogue between cultures is the most fruitful way of interaction between countries. Culture has a great unifying educational mission as it ensures the continuity of connections between epochs and generations. At today’s discussions, Russian experts, as well as representatives of countries of the Islamic world, are looking at current issues regarding the implementation of intercultural projects, multilateral exchanges in the field of education and the development of creative industries. The events will allow us to learn from each other’s positive experiences as they will serve to further strengthen the friendship and creative partnership between our countries, and give an additional impetus to building up mutually beneficial cooperation.”

Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan Leila Fazleyeva explained why it is important to interact with the Islamic world: “About 18,000 students from countries of the Islamic world are studying in the Republic. Interaction with each student is ensured in full so that we can be united, be in sync with the times, and preserve the history and culture of our peoples in a condition that could reflect universal values that have been formed over centuries.”

State Hermitage Director Mikhail Piotrovsky set the tone of the conversation as he demonstrated several items of Islamic art: “Traditional cultural values and understanding the historical background lie in the field of culture. Both determine the life of politics and the economy. We must not forget about that. I would also like to note that cultures are valuable as such. And any culture is sovereign, especially the Islamic culture as it is the culture of the religion, and it is a component of global culture and a component of global cultural heritage. The dialogue of cultures implies differences in perception, and yet all that means that the world is united.”

Minister of Culture of the Astrakhan Region Olga Prokofyeva noted how relevant interaction with the culture of Iran and other OIC countries is: “Today, searching for new forms of interaction in the humanitarian sphere, in creative communication, and joint support of young talents is relevant for the countries sharing the Caspian coast. The Astrakhan Region is Russia's flagship region in building humanitarian ties. Today, we are guided by regulatory documents and federal agreements on cooperation and friendship. The Astrakhan region has already reached direct agreements with Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and individual provinces and cities of Iran.”

Alexander Larin, a member of the General Council, Business Ambassador of “Business Russia” in Iraq, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the ET ENERGOTRANSPROEKT Research and Development Institute, and Board Chairman of the Tavolga Foundation for the Development of Science and Culture, told the audience about a feature of Iraqi literature: “Iraq is not only about resources and power, but it is mostly about culture and art. And if we take, say, literature, poetry is the main genre among Iraqi writers. It is considered the most folk of all poetries, while, say, in Europe or in America poetry is viewed as something that only the educated minority can grasp.”

President of ASPARA FASHION WEEK, Chief designer of the Asyl-Design Fashion Aidarkhan Kaliyev spoke about interaction in the fashion industry: “Fashion today is a new sphere in social projects. In late April, the 13th season of ASPARA FASHION WEEK was held. We have over 20 partners among cities hosting fashion weeks, including Paris, Milan, Amsterdam, Berlin and a number of other fashion weeks, including Asia. Fashion is beyond trend setting, and trend setting in fashion is becoming increasingly social and humane.”

Director of Ibn Khaldon Centre for Humanities and Social Sciences at Qatar University Dr. Nayef Nahar Al Shamari aired the idea that the culture being analyzed by us is mostly inspired by the West: “We know Western culture only. That’s a result of globalization. The expression is nice, but there is no notion behind it, I am afraid. For there are no other things that have not gone global except for Western culture and Western thinking. This is why we are talking about things Western, not about globalization. We need to find another model.”

Professor Farkhod Sharopov, Doctor of Economics, Vice-Rector for Strategic Development and Quality Management at International University of Tourism and Entrepreneurship of Tajikistan, spoke about interaction between tourism and a country’s cultural heritage: “On the one hand, tourism helps give the global community an insight into the unique cultural or historical aspects of a particular region, which can bring economic benefits. On the other hand, uncontrolled tourist flows can lead to degradation or even loss of some elements of cultural heritage. Developing sustainable tourism becomes relevant, as it plays the key role in minimizing the negative impact on cultural heritage and providing socio-economic benefits for the local population.”

Professor Israfil Israfilov, Doctor of Philosophy in Philology, Doctor of Art History, and Honored Artist of Azerbaijan, told the story of how modern Islamic culture developed: “As an ancient world religion, Islam heavily influences the development of science, literature, architecture, decorative and applied arts. After adopting Islam, peoples were forced to adapt their traditions to ideological requirements. The development of political, economic, social and cultural processes in the Middle East, as well as in Asian countries, encouraged the further development of folklore, literature and arts, and contributed to the improvement of theatrical art, too.”

Professor Roza Akhmadieva, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences, Rector of the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education "Kazan State Institute of Culture", dwelled on the importance of technological development and exchange of experience: “Today, government policy is aimed at solving problems of establishing an efficient interaction between science, technology and production, as well as promoting scientific research. I would like to mention the strategy of scientific and technological development for the period until 2030. It envisages interaction between research organizations together with the real sector of the economy. Culture, too, plays a huge role. Science and culture are inseparable."
The 15th International Economic Forum "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum 2024" is being held on May 14-19 in Kazan. This year's keynote is "Trust and Cooperation." The main goal of the forum is to strengthen trade and economic, scientific and technical, social and cultural ties between Russian regions and the countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as well as to promote the development of the Islamic financial system institutions in Russia.
