Rail traffic along the North-South corridor began to grow

Transportation along the North-South corridor has increased by more than 40% since the beginning of the year

Railway transportations on international transport corridor "North - South" in the period from January till May 2023, jumped more than on 40%, up to 4 million tons. Kommersant" writes about it, referring to the received materials.

Transportation through the international transport corridor (ITC) "North - South" in January-May amounted to 4 million tons, an increase of 41.8%. The main share was accounted for the western route connecting Russia with Iran via Azerbaijan - 3.6 mln tons (37.9% growth). In other corridors the dynamics are higher, but the volume of freight traffic is less.

The publication notes that the growth of traffic along the eastern route was due to a number of benefits. For example, at the end of last year a 20% discount on container transportation along the eastern route through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan was introduced.

Analysts believe that the increase in cargo traffic along the "North-South" corridor will continue. Given that restrictions on the supply of goods from the West can only intensify, the demand for transportation of goods in this direction will grow. Despite a number of restrictions in the infrastructure, the growth will still continue even before the completion of the section Resht - Astara.

On May 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the launch of the Resht-Astara railroad, which is a section of the North-South international transport corridor, will diversify global traffic flows.
