The roundtable discussion “Cutting-edge Russian Technologies for Mature Oil and Gas Fields in the Context of a New Paradigm: Economic Efficiency, Digital Transformation and Decarbonization” was moderated by Daniil Sorokin, Director of the All-Russian Research Institute of Ecology under the Russian Natural Resources and Environment Ministry. First Russian Natural Resources and Environment Minister Konstantin Tsyganov, Deputy Industry and Trade Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan Dmitry Guskov, Initiator of WCRC (world-class science centers) and Kazan Federal University Vice-Rector for Earth Sciences Danis Nurgaliev, Head of the Federal Agency for Mineral Resources (Rosnedra) Yevgeny Petrov, Advisor to the Head of the Federal Agency for Mineral Resources (Rosnedra) Alexey Gribanov, Almetyevsk State Oil Institute Rector Alexander Dyakonov, Malaysian State Council (upper house of the parliament) Senator Jaziri Alkaf Abdillah Suffian, Libyan Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Awad Ghaneiwa Mohamed, Chairman of Trans Gulf Energy LLC Thamer Said Ahmed Al-Shanfari, Digital Economics Advisor to the Economics Faculty Dean of the Moscow State University Yelena Tishchenko took part in the event.

The session was devoted to discussing the importance of technological sovereignty and S&T development in the context of economic efficiency and responding to contemporary challenges, including decarbonization. Participants discussed best practices and research results from the world-class science center in the field of clean, resource-efficient energy.

"Today, fossil fuels are not losing their relevance and are still the main source of energy, so the development of environmentally friendly, energy-efficient and cost-effective technologies for hydrocarbon forecasting, exploration and production remains one of the key challenges facing our countries. Every year, the structure of reserves deteriorates, and the majority of new fields require substantial investments," Konstantin Tsyganov said, explaining the relevance of the roundtable topic.

The discussion covered a wide range of topics, from international cooperation in exploration to the introduction of innovative technologies in the oil and gas sector. Special attention was paid to environmentally friendly and energy-efficient technologies, as well as the digital transformation of the industry.

"The equipment market for search, exploration and development of mineral deposits in Russia still retains a certain dependency. Although it should be noted that over the past three years we have made a colossal leap in terms of the introduction of our Russian platforms, both software and equipment of various technological chains. The main problems of the oil and gas industry are related to the production of hard-to-recover reserves, where the share of domestic equipment today is just over 60%," Yevgeny Petrov said, speaking via videoconference.

"Tatarstan is one of the most developed regions of Russia, with strong industrial production, favorable investment climate, high scientific potential and developed infrastructure. I would like to note that it is the industrial production that accounts for almost 50% of our gross domestic product. Last year the industrial production index was 103%. If we talk about the structure of industry, oil production, oil refining, energy, machine building, petrochemicals - these are our main industries," Dmitry Guskov pointed out.

Danis Nurgaliev reviewed the achievements of the center, which has become a leader in the development of technologies for mature oil and gas fields. He emphasized that the consortium created on the basis of four leading Russian universities plays a key role in training specialists for the oil and gas industry and spreading innovative technologies: "One of the tasks of our center is to improve the efficiency of development of giant and difficult fields. There are about ten such fields in Russia."

"We have changed our approach to training students. Our main system now is that students should work with developers, with researchers. That is, they go through lectures in the first half of the day, in the second half of the day they work with those who implement these frontier projects, participate as developers," Alexander Dyakonov said, commenting on the new approaches to training students in the oil industry.

The 15th International Economic Forum "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum 2024" is being held on May 14-19 in Kazan. This year's keynote is "Trust and Cooperation." The main goal of the forum is to strengthen trade and economic, scientific and technical, social and cultural ties between Russian regions and the countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as well as to promote the development of the Islamic financial system institutions in Russia.
