The participants of the session "Russia - Islamic World: International Interregional Activation" discussed current challenges and prospects for cooperation between Russia and the countries of the Islamic world.
Head of Russia’s Republic of Mordovia Artyom Zdunov spoke about the region's trade partners from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation countries: the CIS countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan) and Turkey. According to him, long-term cooperation is planned with Egypt, Qatar, Malaysia, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. In 2021-2023, the export of products to these countries will increase from 27.5% to 55.4% of total exports. "The main export trading partner is Kazakhstan (35% of total exports in 2023), the main products supplied are rolling stock and equipment. Among the foreign countries, the main export partner of Mordovia is Turkey (5.4% of total exports in 2023), the supplied products are wood and wood products," Artyom Zdunov specified. He added that the republic is very interested in partners in the field of pharmaceuticals and lighting products. In order to attract investors and develop business, it is planned to create a special economic zone of an industrial and production type.
DPR head Denis Pushilin said that the key areas of industrial development in the republic are metallurgy, machine building, coke and chemical industry, production of cable and steel wire products. This year, the DPR plans to launch 19 enterprises and reopen several others, which will create additional jobs. "Despite the constant shelling, metallurgical enterprises in 2023 increased the volume of sales of products, it increased by 53.3% compared to 2022, and chemical industry enterprises increased sales by 25%," Denis Pushilin pointed out. He added that the DPR is now facing the task of creating industrial clusters for import substitution, ensuring technological sovereignty, and expanding the range of products. For this purpose, the republic plans to introduce support measures in the form of exemption from certain taxes in the free economic zone.
Tomsk Region Governor Vladimir Mazur noted that the largest share of gross domestic product is due to mining, manufacturing and trade. The driving force of innovative economy is youth: 65,700 students study in the Tomsk Region, 11,600 of them are foreign students from 97 countries. The government actively supports young specialists. "Now the region has a laboratory of industrial artificial intelligence, as well as the first student business incubator in the country and a special economic zone of the technological-innovative type. Soon there will be a modern inter-university campus, competence centers of large companies, the Tomsk petrochemical cluster, and the Microelectronics and Communication Systems production and technology cluster," Vladimir Mazur explained.
The 15th International Economic Forum "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum 2024" is being held on May 14-19 in Kazan. This year's keynote is "Trust and Cooperation." The main goal of the forum is to strengthen trade and economic, scientific and technical, social and cultural ties between Russian regions and the countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), as well as to promote the development of the Islamic financial system institutions in Russia.
